There are many paths to recovery from addiction, each one
designed for the individual. Since each substance abuser is unique from every
other, his path to recovery must also be unique. Addiction treatment will
include all or some of the following: detoxification, counseling, sober living,
and regular meetings with other recovering addicts.
When a person is affected by mental illness and turns to
alcohol or drugs as a remedy, treatment has to be sensitive to the complicated
interplay between both factors. They require in-depth physical and psychiatric
attention.
What is the problem, exactly? Why should someone receive
addiction treatment if he likes getting high or mellowing out with chemical
substances? One reason is that he has lost control. Cravings direct him, not
reason or ethics. Also, his body will eventually quit on him. He will lose his
memory or his liver might cease to function. Heart attacks and seizures also
put addicts in hospital, making the decision to get treatment a life-or-death
one. A lot of drug addicts die of an overdose.
If someone feels the stigma of addiction hanging over her
head, it is important that she realize how many individuals hide addiction.
There are also many who come out of rehab impatient for recovery or fearful of
ridicule. They stop going to therapy and support groups too soon. Many would
have responded well to sober living. Do not rush recovery. With the help of
counselors and social workers, obtain education or job skills without which you
will be unable to enjoy a meaningful, drug-free life.
