A drug rehab treatment center can help those who are
addicted to drugs, alcohol, or both. A rehabilitation center is more than a
facility to get the addict sober, it also offers safe detoxing, how to live
sober, and prevent relapses.
In many cases, the addiction to drugs and alcohol are simply
too great for the person to stop using on their own. This is where a rehab
center is needed and is often the lifeline for someone who has made some bad
choices. Many people have successfully completed treatment and go on to be very
happy and productive members of society.
Once a person agrees to go voluntarily to rehab or is
ordered to go by a court, the detox will begin upon arrival. Alcohol is one drug
that cannot be stopped cold turkey if the addict is drinking heavily. Doing so
can be dangerous and therefore a medical detox is needed.
Once detox has been completed at the drug rehab center, the
work is just beginning. The addict may not 'physically' be addicted to the
substance, but psychologically he or she is. When someone spends their days and
nights looking for their next high or drink, they have to learn new skills and
a new sober way of living.
Many rehab centers offer relapse prevention by entering the
person in a half-way house for a specific number of days or weeks.
